If you want to dive the Similan Islands on a budget then the cheapest Similan islands liveaboard is MV Nang Nuan. It’s a very basic boat by the standard of the modern boats in the Similans these days but it’s been running successfully for many years and always gets great feedback. For people who can do without a few comforts it’s ideal.
There are no cabins on Nang Nuan, all passengers sleep under cover on the upper deck. There is no air conditioning, just the sea breeze. Because there is no AC there is no need to run a generator all night so the boat is truly silent at night.
Nang Nuan is a small boat, taking just 8 divers so there are no overcrowded dive sites. Because it’s the only boat of it’s kind and only takes 8 passengers it books up quickly. If you want to book you need to put down 20 percent deposit. You can pay the balance when you arrive in Khao Lak.
Nang Nuan runs 3 day 2 night, 9 dive trips that depart from Khao Lak every Wednesday and Sunday at 8am from November to April. Trips return to Khao Lak at 6pm Friday and Tuesday.
Diving is at the Similan Islands and Koh Bon, not Koh Tachai and Richelieu Rock.
The price is 10,900 baht plus 1,000 baht for national park fees
To join the trip you must have dived within the last year and be certified to dive to 30m
Nang Nuan is 13m long, wooden hulled and cruises at 8 knots. All basic safety equipment is on board including GPS, SatNav, life vests, life rings and emergency oxygen. Dives are guided by two dive masters.
