Shark point
Spotlight on Shark Point diving
Shark Point is reached by day trip dive boat from either Phuket, Phi Phi or Krabi. It’s very close to Anemone Reef and the King Cruiser Wreck making for a very nice 3 dive day trip. This is Phuket Shark Point which is different to the other Shark Point dive site close to Phi Phi.
Shark Point can be dived all year round.
Shark Point dive site is located about 10 miles east of Phuket about half way between Phuket and Phi Phi Islands. Shark Point rock (often referred to as Phuket Shark Point 1) breaks the surface and is marked with a light beacon to warn passing boat traffic of it’s location. The rock descents to about 20 metres before leveling off to a sandy bottom. Phuket Shark Point is covered with soft corals, anemones, sea fans and barrel sponges and is teeming with life. Leopard sharks are resident at Phuket Shark Point, they like to sit on the sandy bottom at the edge of the reef.
To the south of the main rock across a short stretch of sand at 18m is a second rock called Shark Point 2, it can often be seen from shark point 1 making underwater navigation easy. In the sandy areas between shark points 1 and 2 you can find blue spotted sting rays, garden eels, cuttlefish and mantis shrimps. Shark Point 2 is slightly smaller than shark point 1 and doesn’t break the surface, finishing at about 5 metres below, an ideal place to do an end of dive safety stop. The dive site continues south to shark point 3 which is smaller and deaper, most divers only have time to see shark points 1 and 2 in a single dive. Visibility at Shark Point is pretty variable, on bad days it’s green, on a clear day Shark Point rivals Thailand’s best dive sites, it’s like a mini Richelieu Rock in some ways.
