John Grey pioneered sea kayaking in Phang Nga bay back in 1989. Since then his tours has been widely copied but John Grey Sea Canoe still offers arguably the best tour to Phang Nga bay.

The “Hong By Starlight” has a different itinerary to all the other Phang Nga bay tours and is for people who prefer a bit more kayaking and a bit less touristy stuff. This tour does two main things differently to avoid the crowds:

• Hong By Starlight departs later, at about midday and returns at about 10 pm. Just by running at a different time to all other tours means that you avoid the majority of other boats. A lot of Phuket tours start early to beat the crowds, so it’s nice to get a lay in and enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your resort before heading out.
  It also means that you get to kayaking in the caves after dark which is a special experience.
  Lunch and dinner are provided on the boat, dinner is a really tasty buffet, the food is freshly cooked on board.

• Hong By Starlight does not visit James Bond Island or Koh Panyee (sea gypsy village). Phang Nga bay is a big place but 99% of tour boats go to James Bond Island and Koh Panyee. So by not going there you can escape the masses. You’ll be amazed at how few boats there are in Phang Nga bay, even in the high season.

Hong by Starlight itinerary

11.30 – 12.30: Phuket hotel pick-up

12.00 – 13.00: Arrive Ao Por pier and board the boat. A Thai buffet lunch is served on the cruise into Phang Nga bay, meet your crew and briefing for the day

14.30: Arrive at the first island and explore one or two caves and hongs

15.30: Return to the boat and move to the second island

16.00: Explore two more caves and hongs

18.00: Thai seafood dinner served buffet style during sunset. Time to make your kratongs

19.00: Return to your kayak after dark to loi kratong

20.00 – 21.00: Cruise back to Ao Por pier. Transfer to the minivan.

21.30 – 22.00: Arrive back at your hotel.
